One month ago I got my hands on the new Lumix GX85 camera and the Leica 15mm f/1.7 lens. I could tell the moment I attached the two that this was a match made in heaven.
I buckled on my favorite leather strap and set out to carry the Lumix GX85 with me everyday.
Now if you're like most professional photographers this probably sounds crazy to you. If you're not here's a little secret... Most pros only carry their iPhone with them unless they are on a paid shoot.
And there's good reason for that. If you're using a Canon, Nikon or any other traditional DSLR system, thats a miserable piece of kit to carry with you everyday. Especially if you put good glass on the end. All of the sudden you've got 6 pounds strapped to your shoulder. That's no walk in the park! Trust me, I know... I used to use Canon gear.
Can a Canon 5D mk3 and a nice L lens help make a fantastic photo? Yes. But not if its sitting on your shelf.
As a working pro photographer and film-maker I'm always looking for ways to improve my skill. The truth is, the best way to improve your work is simple. Make a photograph every single day.
I don't mean take a snapshot with your iPhone. I mean MAKE a photograph. Take a proper piece of equipment with you, come up with an idea, or look for inspiration and MAKE a photograph.
This is why I love the GX85.
Its slightly larger than a deck of cards, weighs just over one pound, shoots stabilized 4K video, and has amazing image quality.
And did I mention its beautiful? ...Yes I'm a snob for camera aesthetics.
People are always asking me about my "film camera." The first week I had it, one lady stopped me on the street and said, wow, that's a really old camera. I laughed and told her it's actually only been on the market about one month!
Besides all of the amazing stuff it does... Its just a cool looking camera!
Okay, that's enough talk... Here's a few of my favorite photos from my first month hands on with the amazing Lumix GX85.
P.S. All of these photos were shot on the GX85, transferred via the built in wifi to my iPhone 6 and edited there. Also, stay tuned for part 2 next week.
