I'm a believer in the tremendous power of storytelling.
I've been a student of stories for the last decade or more. Its a huge part of the reason I'm in the line of work I'm in. Its a huge part of the reason I'm so compelled by the life of Jesus, who must have been the greatest storyteller ever.
I mean how many people continue to have people write books, speak about them and even base their entire lives around them 2 millennia after they die?
One of my favorite Philosophers is an Austrian named Ivan Illich said,
"Neither revolution nor reformation can ultimately change a society, rather you must tell a new powerful tale, one so persuasive that it sweeps away the old myths and becomes the preferred story, one so inclusive that it gathers all the bits of our past and our present into a coherent whole, one that even shines some light into our future so that we can take the next step... If you want to change a society, then you have to tell an alternative story."
The importance and power of storytelling cannot be underestimated.
Stories make us laugh.
They make us cry.
They move us into action.
Stories have the power to shape our lives into something dramatically better.
This is why I love making wedding films.
When making a wedding film not only do I get to create something that is visually pleasing, but I get to tell the story of how a couple fell in love. I tell the story of the formation of a new family and of the uniting of two families.
I get to tell stories that will be treasured for generations as children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren look back at their heritage and see the foundation of love their family was build upon.
It is not a task I take lightly as some do. It is not about creating a "highlight film" of the events that happened that day. It is about telling the opening act of a new family history that will live on forever.
And so I leave you with a film I created almost a year and a half ago.
I've grown in my technical skills since then... but the story of the love of this couple still moves me to this day, and I still follow them on Instagram to watch their love story continue to grow as the years go by. Thank you Robert and Haleigh for trusting me to tell your love story.
